“Carl the Dog”, 8×10″ pastel on paper by Annie Dash Studios
Carl is one of the adorable neighborhood dogs who was walking with his owner the morning my children started school this year. I happened to have my camera with me for their first day of school photos, and I asked if I could photograph him. His owner graciously accepted, for which I am so grateful.
This sweet Cavapoo was very excited to meet me and eager to see my camera. Here’s a photo I took of him:

For this piece, I used PanPastels to produce a painterly look for the underpainting of the fur and features, then added Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils for all the detail work. I most especially enjoyed re-creating Carl’s soulful eyes in pastel.
