“Patoka Lake”, 11×14″ pastel on Pastelbord artist’s panel by Annie Dash Studios
Patoka Lake is a picturesque reservoir in southern Indiana, well loved across the region for its natural beauty, wildlife, and family-friendly recreational attractions.
My family had the pleasure of visiting Patoka Lake State Park this summer for a long weekend camping trip. We enjoyed our time camping, picnicking, hiking, visiting the nature center, and of course, we loved visiting the beautiful lake. While my family was swimming, I took the opportunity to capture a few photos of the view with the intention of creating a work of art from the reference images. Here’s the image I used as inspiration for my final artwork:

For this piece, I used PanPastels to map out the composition, including the sky and clouds, lake, hill and trees, and beach. I continued to add base layers of PanPastels, then used Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils for all the detail work. You can view the highlights of my work process in the photo collage below.
My goal was to capture the tranquility and beauty of this special place that so many Hoosiers and travelers from nearby states love to visit.
